Stay cool after an interview

Creating a good impression in an interview is important, but afterwards don't be too keen...

Interviews can be a real minefield. Your first interview goes well. You're so excited. Everything seems right. You have all the skills needed and more, you got on really well with the interviewer and it all seems very promising. You send a note after the interview, thanking them for their time and reiterating how much you enjoyed the interview and wish them a good weekend. Your second interview with another member of the management team is coming up. Should you send another note to them, pre-empting your second interview, just to say how much you're looking forward to meeting their colleague? No. Leave it. You've made your point, the interviewer knows you're interested – a second note could be construed as too much, too eager, too needy, too keen. You only wanted them to know that you care. But it's too much. We've all got a cynical side – think about how the interviewer feels. Do they regret giving you their personal email address? What sort of employee would you make? Someone who needs constant attention, someone who's too much trouble? This all seems terribly unfair, when all you wanted to do was show that you're really interested in the position. All I can say is one 'thank you' note is enough – and if in doubt, speak to your recruiter and get their opinion. Over-egging the pudding is as bad as over talking in an interview. Be cool. If it was meant to be, the job will be yours!
